Hotline Miami is a stylish game about stylish murdering of people. It has broken narrative design. It's supposed to make you think about killing people. Hm, why do I like killing people so much? It's strange. People are generally good but think about killing people. If you want insight about this behavior you should read a book. The game does not provide good answers. It makes you think that it's just pointless, but it's not. It has it's evolutional foundation. It provides means for strong DNA to survive and for weak DNA to perish. So it's definitely not pointless.
The game has scoring system. How does it relate to narrative? It does not. It's just a videogame system. This makes me think that the gameplay was developed before narrative design. Then devs thought about narrative and wanted to make it pointless because they do not know how to make sense of so much killing.
They should have put this effort into developing stealth system. Because it's very bare-bones in its current state. I even think that at the beginning they thought about non-lethal completion of levels and gave up. Because killing is more fun.
People that enjoy this game take masks that give you more opportunities at achieving high scores and try to get A+ at each level. So it's enjoyable for competitive gamers and speedrunners who just want a videogame experience.
